How To Be Happy // Summer of Psalms // 07.06.25
We now take a summer break from our Matthew studies to take a look at some of the Psalms in a series we call, “Summer of Psalms.” I begin this series by being blessed to teach Psalm 1. A great psalm! There are multiple ways we can take this but I think a main idea is the contrast of happiness and unhappiness. The Psalmist gives us a path to bring us into a consistent joy and happiness. You don’t want to miss this one. See you there!

Discussion Questions – 07.06.25
We begin our Summer of Psalms series with one of the all-time great ones: Psalm 1. Begin by reading through it many times to get a good grasp of what the writer is saying. This Psalm is loaded with truth. Take your time writing down your thoughts, questions, and insights. Then share them with your group during your discussion time.
1. Blessed has the idea of Happy. Therefore, I titled the message “How to be Happy.” In your opinion, why are so many people unhappy? And have you ever gone through an unhappy period of life? If so, did you realize why?
2. Notice the progression of Psalm 1:1: Walk, Stand, and Sit. What specific things is this person NOT doing that leads to happiness? Explain
3. Psalm 1:2 is a contrast to verse 1. Write out the differences between verses one and two. And really try to compare the two to see the depth of contrast between them. Then share your findings with your group.
4. Back to Psalm 1:1. The man is sitting stationary in the seat of Scoffers. A scoffer is a criticizer. Why are criticizers, unhappy people? How can a critical spirit stunt spiritual growth? Explain
5. In Psalm 1:2 we are to meditate on God’s word day and night and delight in His laws. Delight means to take pleasure in and find purpose. The result of this lifestyle is Verse 3. List up to six things in verse 3 that are a byproduct of a verse 2 lifestyle. AND add a small description to each one for personal application to share.
6. Last question. Verse 2 teaches us to “Meditate day and night in God’s word.” List about 3 personal transformations in your thinking because of “meditating regularly on God’s word.” What I’m asking is, what are some old ways of thinking that have been replaced with God’s truth? And if you can back that new way of thinking with the Bible.
